What is a 'field'?

A career field is describes associated occupations that require similar skills and expertise. The Lexile and Quantile Career Database and the Lexile and Quantile Growth Planners reference career fields.

What is Occupational Information Network (O*NET)

The O*NET Program is the nation's primary source of occupational information. Valid data are essential to understanding the rapidly changing nature of work and how it impacts the workforce and the U.S. economy. From this information, applications are developed to facilitate the development and maintenance of a skilled workforce. Central to the project is the O*NET database, containing hundreds of standardized and occupation-specific descriptors on almost 1,000 occupations covering the entire U.S. economy. The database, which is available to the public at no cost, is continually updated from input by a broad range of workers in each occupation. O*NET information is used by millions of individuals every year, including those taking advantage of O*NET Online, My Next Move, and other publicly and privately developed applications. The data have proven vital in helping people find the training and the jobs they need and employers the skilled workers necessary to be competitive in the marketplace.

The PMP helps projections customers make informed decisions based on the most reliable and relevant occupational and industry outlook information. Funding for the PMP is provided by the U.S. Department of Labor, Employment & Training Administration, with technical support from the Bureau of Labor Statistics and other entities across the country.

Bright Outlook Occupations are careers that are expected to grow and/or emerge in the next few years and offer large numbers of new job openings.

What are SOC codes?

SOC codes are an identifying element within the Standard Occupational Classification (SOC) system. They are used by federal agencies to classify workers and careers.

What are the instructions for a Field and Career Search?

With the Lexile and Quantile Career Database you can identify the reading and math demands needed for a desired career and use them to inform goal setting and career preparedness. Lexile and Quantile measures are the only metrics available to compare and describe the reading and math demands of a career.

What results will I see from the Lexile and Quantile Career Database?

General results include the Bright Outlook status, Years of Education, SOC code, and Field(s). The Lexile information returned includes the Lower Lexile Measure, Typical Lexile Measure, and Higher Lexile Measure associated with that job. The Quantile information returned includes the Lower Quantile Measure, Typical Quantile Measure, Higher Quantile Measure, and Highest Math Course Required associated with that job.

Why do some careers not have Lexile or Quantile information?

Some careers in the Lexile and Quantile Career Database do not yet have information about their Lexile reading demand or Quantile math demand. Information is being added regularly. Continue to check for updated information.
